HONG KONG Li Yibing was just one of the struggling artists outside of Beijing, at the artists' enclave of Song Zhuang, before his Chubby Buddies captured the attention of the Art world.
Li's childhood was deprived, being born in the poorest part of rural Hebei in the 1960's. His harsh upbringing urged him to search for peace and to create tranquility in his works. The "Meditation" series show's Li's buddies posing at their happiest moment with their eyes closed, contemplating and wishing for something pleasurable to come their way.
Li says his works are aimed at 'providing a soft landing zone' for viewers amidst the chaors and conflicts of life today. Li supplements his chubby buddies images with symbols that creat a sense of serenity, happiness and safety that may be surreal yet soothingly comforting.
