David Beckham Stars in Breitling for Bentley

7 September 2013

By Scott Campbell

One of the world's most successful sportsmen and style icons, David Beckham stars in the Breitling for Bentley campaign photographed by Anthony Mandler, who had previously lensed the footballer for watch label's Transocean Chronograph Unitime Worldtimer watch.

Launched in 2003, 'Breitling for Bentley' combines Swiss craftsmanship with quintessential British style and a global ambassador none more so than David Beckham, embodies the elegance and luxury associated with its Breitling for Bentley timepiece.

Choosing once again in an advertising campaign shot in the Californian desert, Mandler said: "My aim was to make Beckham a hero: a strong, masculine figure."

I wanted to take the strongest elements of Breitling communication and associate them with the strongest aspects of David’s image and personality.

Beckham added: “I was among the first to acquire a Breitling for Bentley chronograph. I love the combination of a high-performance ‘engine’ reflecting Swiss excellence and a powerful design."

I have been a long time admirer of Breitling and its heritage.

Breitling for Bentley: 10 Years of British Chic and Swiss Excellence

This partnership first began 10 years ago when Breitling was invited to design the dashboard clock of the Continental GT model. In joining forces, Bentley went on to claim a historic first and second-place finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans that same year. Breitling produced a limited-edition watch to commemorate the victory, and thus solidified the two marques.

Since then the watch line has drawn inspiration from classic Bentley design details such as "knurled" (a term for a crisscross diamond shape cut into metal) bezels inspired by the famous radiator grilles and oscillating weights shaped like wheel rims of the British motorcar.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of this partnership this year, Breitling has introduced three new chronographs, all powered by Breitling's in-house movements: the Bentley B06 with its variable tachometer; the Bentley B04 GMT; and the B05 Unitime.

The Bentley B06 chronograph which is featured in the campaign featuring David Beckham, houses a Manufacture Breitling calibre, chronometer-certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute), the highest benchmark in terms of precision and reliability.

It is distinguished by its exclusive "30-second chronograph" system enabling extremely precise readings of the measured times, a perfect symbol of the proud alliance between the grand art of British carmaking and the fine Swiss watchmaking tradition.

All three will be available in Breitling's first British flagship boutique which opened in June on London's New Bond Street.
