Haute Couture Week takes place from 19 to 23 January 2014, with Versace and Giambattista Valli kicking off the catwalk presentations of their Spring/Summer 2014 collections this past Sunday. Unlike the ready-to-wear fashion weeks that preview designs two seasons ahead, the couture showcases provide a preview of bespoke creations for the immediate next season.

Couturier Giambattista Valli presented his sixth showcase during the semi-annual Haute Couture Week in Paris, revealing a new direction in his designs for the Spring/Summer 2014 season.

The runway that was lined with giant metallic multi-faceted metallic boulders, looking like props, but actually innovatively serving the purpose of providing different angled perspectives of the couture creations as the models sashayed by.

Bold cuts were the mainstay approach by the Italian-born designer, ensuring every look in his collection was distinct from each other.

The couturier also employed the use of ivory brocade as a staple fabric, using colour-blocking to mix things up.

Exquisite embroidering was the highlight of several key pieces, immaculately positioned on various gowns and dresses, as well as bodice, accentuating the female silhouette with structure around the hips, some through the clever use of twists of brocade, forming a knotted bandeau at the front.

Valli also gave the fishtail gown a redesign and youthful update, with some pieces drastically shortened -- the front of the dress sat mid-thigh whilst the fell down to the knee.

Full-length evening gowns, as part of the required formalwear segment of the haute couture presentation, also featured clever interpretations of the fishtail silhouette, but not without retaining the sensual elegance that fans of Giambattista Valli have become so familiar with.
