All Aboard the Nautical Revival in Gucci Menswear Spring/Summer 2015 Collection

26 June 2014

By Peter Yeap

The nautical theme saw a revival in Gucci’s menswear collection for the Spring/Summer 2015 season, offering a twist yet embracing the enduring sophistication of the classic look.

This approach follows on from the themed floral and sportswear hybrid for Spring/Summer 2014, and Fall/Winter 2014/2015's which featured 1960s style.

It was back in the 19th century when Queen Elizabeth dressed her four year old son, Albert Edward, in a sailor suit to wear aboard the Royal Yacht. The seafaring stripes have since then become a must-have pattern upon neck-to-knee swimwear.
The fashion then immersed itself into Hollywood movies and soon after transferred from swimwear into casual clothing.

Up first was the Gucci man with his rock ‘n roll free spirit and affection for jet-setting and devotion for noble sporting, adorning a slim cut white suit with two navy bands of piping at the sleeves (denoting rank insignias), alongside slender shaped trousers, and later in red and teal green versions, showcase a slim urban silhouette fit for the sartorial naval captain.

Navy blazers with styling variations from the peacoat to the mackintosh, were Gucci’s sophisticated take on sea-borne tailoring classics - perfect for a weekend sojourn at the yacht club. Gold buttons further embellish the accompanying dockside ankle-length pants, whilst stone-washed jeans with paint splashes look appropriate for the deckhand.

Ribbed knitwear - a luxurious version of the fisherman’s pullover - and suits were given an ostentatious new-fangled Gucci crest.

The nautical theme, with reminiscent pirate stripes, paired well with a minimalist palette of designs in navy blue, blue-black, khaki, white, red, and emerald green. There was even an untucked, striped pajama top making an appearance amongst the chic three-piece suits.

Ultra luxurious travel and messenger bags in calfskin, crocodile or canvas with maxi monochrome or striped cross-body straps, brought out the collection’s relaxed sophistication - with duffel bags perfect for the getaway during the summer season.

Striped foulards of knotted metal bracelets - a highlight in Gucci's new menswear accessories - along with beaded necklaces are set to bring out the bohemian instincts for the summer.

For evening wear, black lines were adopted to border the edge of while dinner jacket and shot down the sides of pants to deliver a bit of consistency to the formal wear.

Ahoy Matey! It's time to board the HMS Gucci!
