Today, on the eve of Diana's 20th anniversary, The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry are paying a visit to Kensington Palace's White Garden, created as a tribute to the late Princess twenty years on.The Sunken Garden at Diana's former home has been transformed into a white garden with flowers and foliage inspired by her life, image and style.
The plants are predominantly white and cream, although some accent colours have been planted. More than 12,000 flowers have been hand-planted, including Diana tulips, forget-me-nots, Treasure Primrose wallflowers, Persian lilies, English white roses and Cosmos daisies.
The gardeners spoke with her family and friends in order to find out her favourite flowers. According to her brother, Earl Spencer, Diana's favourite flowers were forget-me-nots.
The palace's current head gardener, Sean Harkin, revealed that a lot of research had gone into the design, and that he used Diana's dresses in the Palace's exhibition as inspiration. He wanted to create something simple and elegant that reflected Diana.
"We think the overall effect is very peaceful but also very joyful," he says.
Graham Dillamore, the Palace's head gardener from 1984 to 1992, recalled some fond memories of the Princess walking around the gardens. "I think she appreciated the hard work we put in. She was more worried about us out in the cold and asking are we wrapped up," he said. "...there were certain colours she liked in the garden — soft pinks, whites, yellow, pastel shades. She used to turn her nose up if I ever put red or deep purple flowers."
He said: "I liked her sense of humour. Once we were struggling to start a lawn mower that had broken down, and we were just about to give up and she tapped me on the shoulder and said 'Maybe if you speak to it nicely it will work'."
The Trio are also meeting with representatives of the charities Diana supported at the time of her death. These include Centrepoint, Child Bereavement UK, English National Ballet, The Royal Marsden, Great Ormond Street Hospital, National AIDS Trust, The Leprosy Mission, and Landmine Survivors Network.
William and Harry also visited the Palace gates where tributes had been left to Diana. These are the same gates that saw the sea of flowers in 1997.
The Duchess braved the rain to visit Kensington Palace's White Garden in a new floral dress by Prada today.
Prada's £1,183/$2,200 'Poppy-print silk-crepe dress' features an orange and black poppy print, a small stand collar, smock waistband and detachable neck tie.
It is described: 'Saturated shades of green and orange bring beautiful impact to Prada's Poppy-print silk-crepe dress. An elegant neck tie and smocked waistband conjure vintage-style elegance, while the swirling knee-length skirt will look chic with both flats and heels.'
The dress colour is 'Smeraldo', and it is available at Matches Fashion and My Theresa. The choice of poppies is appropriate, as they have long symbolized remembrance and peace in death.
Kate was wearing her Monica Vinader 'Siren Wire Earrings' today. The 18ct Gold Vermeil on Sterling Silver earrings are available for £125/$195. Kate's stone is Green Onyx, but they also come in Labradorite and Black Line Onyx.
Kate finished off the look with her LK Bennett 'Fern' nappa leather beige courts with a 10cm/3.9" heel, which are available in most sizes for £195/$345.
