Mercedes-Benz and HUGO BOSS for Alex Thomson Racing

11 October 2015

By Scott Campbell

Mercedes-Benz has announced that it is joining HUGO BOSS as co-sponsor and technology partner for Alex Thomson Racing, one of the leading off-shore racing teams competing in the Ocean Masters World Championship.

Entering the racing calendar reserved for the world's most cutting edge sailing yachts is the brand new IMOCA 60 HUGO BOSS, made completely of carbon fibre with a nomex core.

The racing yacht's exterior paint was developed by chemicals specialist BASF in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, and is characterised by an infrared-reflective effect, which significantly reduces temperatures onboard whilst still being painted completely black.

The hull and deck have been coated in this innovative coat.

Structural-wise, VPLP/Verdier and the Alex Thomson Racing Team came together to design the yacht, with a unique aesthetic touch contributed by Konstantin Grcic, a world renowned industrial designer.

Alex Thomson, the youngest yachtsman to ever win a round-the-world race, will be competing on board the yacht for the first time in October during the Transat Jacques Vabre Race.
