Launched by Blancpain in 1953, the Fifty Fathoms is the first true diver's watch. Created by a diver and chosen by pioneers, it played a vital role in the development of scuba diving. It is the catalyst of Blancpain’s commitment to ocean conservation.
This special edition of the 70th Anniversary Fifty Fathoms Act 1, has been inspired by the 1953 original Fifty Fathoms as well as two other landmark editions: the 2003 50th Anniversary Fifty and the 2007 Fifty Fathoms which marked the birth of the new generations of this icon. The DNA of all three shines through this unique edition with its blue unidirectional bezel, bombé in form bringing exceptional visual depth and constructed from sapphire with its extraordinary resistance to scratches; its graduated blue dial, darker on the outer perimeter with luminous indexes, Arabics at 3, 6, 9, and 12 and stick markers at the five minute marks, each fashioned from multiple layers of Super-LumiNova to bestow extra depth; its in-house calibre 1315 movement fitted with three mainspring barrels, giving the timepiece a 5-day power reserve, and a free sprung balance fitted with a silicon hairspring, for greater precision and robustness.
The clear caseback offers a view of haut de gamme finishing of the movement with its extra-large jewels and the 18K gold winding rotor, coated with a NAC platinum-based alloy and inscribed with the Only Watch legend. The stainless steel case debuts a new size for the Fifty Fathoms, 42.3mm.
Fitted to the watch is a blue NATO-style strap constructed with nylon reclaimed and recycled from fishing nets removed from the sea as part of ocean environmental cleanup efforts.
