Oris breathes new life into the Big Crown Pointer Date - Watches & Wonders 2025 #WatchesandWonders2025
By SENATUS Editor | 8 April 2025

The Oris Big Crown Pointer Date is a timeless icon in the world of watchmaking, with a legacy that dates back to the 1930s. Originally conceived as a tool watch for pilots, the Big Crown was designed to be as reliable and precise as possible, while remaining easy to use in the challenging conditions of a cockpit. With a stainless steel case, black dial, bold Arabic numerals, and an oversized crown that could be gripped even with gloves, it quickly became the watch of choice for aviators. Its distinctive central red-tipped pointer hand indicated the date, offering both functionality and legibility for demanding professionals.

While its original purpose has long since evolved, the Big Crown Pointer Date remains one of Oris’s signature designs, an emblem of the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and precision. Almost 90 years after its first release, it has secured its place as a Swiss watchmaking icon. Its classic design has endured not only for its utility but for its timeless beauty, an enduring reminder of Oris’s rich history.

This year, Oris breathes new life into the Big Crown Pointer Date with subtle modern updates. There are two variants at 40mm with warm terracotta or green dials and Calibre 403, giving them a small seconds indication at 6 o’clock, as well as all the benefits of an Oris Calibre 400 Series movement. Three further 40mm variants with either yellow, lilac or blue dials in inviting hues will be powered by a Swiss Made automatic. The new 34mm offerings also introduces a more compact size with a textured beige dial or a black dial adorned with 12 lab-grown baguette diamonds.

Adding to the watch’s versatility, the collection includes a sleek, sporty stainless steel H-link metal bracelet, paired with an Oris-developed butterfly clasp for a seamless finish. Alternatively, the Calibre 403 versions come on a sustainable deer leather strap, crafted in collaboration with Cervo Volante. This fresh, versatile collection offers a contemporary take on a true classic.
