A luminous night in Glashütte with the A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Lumen - Watches & Wonders 2026 #WatchesandWonders2026

There is a certain kind of magic that happens when the lights go down and the world turns to velvet. For the storied watchmaker A. Lange & Söhne, the darkness is not an end but a beginning. With the release of the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar "Lumen," the brand has crafted a timepiece that is quite literally a shining example of watchmaking artistry, by day and by night. Limited to just 50 pieces, this platinum-clad marvel is set to make its grand debut at Watches and Wonders 2026 in Geneva.

The design language of this particular LANGE 1 is a study in contrast and transparency. A gleaming 950 platinum case, measuring a sophisticated 41.9 millimetres, frames a dark, semi-transparent sapphire crystal dial. This isn't just an aesthetic choice; it is a "constructive necessity". The transparency allows energy-rich UV light to pass through the dial, continuously charging the luminous compound of the displays hidden beneath, causing them to glow with an ethereal green light once evening falls.

At the heart of this masterpiece lies the newly developed calibre L225.1, a movement so complex it requires 685 individual parts to function. It incorporates two grand complications into the unmistakable, off-centre design that has made the LANGE 1 a modern icon: a tourbillon with stop seconds and a perpetual calendar featuring a unique peripheral month ring. This month ring, along with the outsize date and retrograde day-of-week display, switches instantaneously to produce "unambiguous readings at all times".

One cannot discuss this A. Lange & Söhne creation without mentioning the premiere of the first luminous moon-phase display with an integrated day/night indication. A celestial disc rotates once every 24 hours, acting as a backdrop for the lunar orbit. During the daylight hours, one sees a clear sky, but at night, the dial reveals a dark firmament "studded with a multitude of luminous stars". It is a complication so precise that it deviates from the true position of the moon by only one day after 122.6 years.

While the calendar is the star of the dial, the tourbillon is the secret kept for the wearer. Only a subtle inscription at 12 o’clock hints at its presence until one turns the watch over to peer through the sapphire-crystal caseback. There, the refined mechanism is revealed, featuring a filigreed carriage that rotates once a minute to compensate for the influence of gravity. The artisanal virtuosity is evident in the stainless steel tourbillon cock, which is finished with a "black polish" so perfect that it reflects light like a mirror from one angle and appears jet-black from another.

A. Lange & Söhne has ensured that even the most functional elements are treated with reverence. A central rotor crafted from 18-carat white gold and 950 platinum provides a 50-hour power reserve, while a diamond endstone secured by a screwed gold chaton sits at the centre of the tourbillon. It is a nod to the 1A-quality pocket watches crafted by Ferdinand Adolph Lange nearly two centuries ago. Paired with a hand-stitched black alligator leather strap, the "Lumen" is a testament to the brand's ongoing quest for perfection.
