Art HK 11: Asia One Gallery to Showcase contemporary Asian art

10 April 2011

By Sonia Kolesnikov-Jessop for LuxArtAsia

Maybe it felt a bit nudged by Art Stage Singapore, which put on a strong focused Asian show, but Art HK 11 has just announced the exhibitor list for Asia One, the new gallery section dedicated to contemporary Asian art.

This section will feature 47 galleries from 12 countries in Asia each showcasing a solo presentation by an artist of Asian origin! However, the organizers are stretching the meaning of Asia to its limit, including Turkey, Dubai and Israel, as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Singapore will be represented by the fairly new Chan Hampe Galleries, and Primo Marella Gallery from Beijing will showcase hot new auction artist Ronald Ventura.

This year, ART HK will welcome over 168 galleries from 30 countries in its Galleries section, with top names like Marianne Boesky Gallery, Leo Castelli Gallery, James Cohan Gallery, Gagosian Gallery, Lehmann Maupin, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Sperone Westwater and White Cube. Galleries new to the Fair include Galleria Massimo De Carlo from Milan; Sadie Coles HQ, Stephen Friedman Gallery, Victoria Miro Gallery, Kate MacGarry and Timothy Taylor Gallery from London; Acquavella Galleries, Gladstone Gallery, Marian Goodman Gallery, Sean Kelly Gallery, David Zwirner and L&M Arts from New York, Yvon Lambert from Paris, and Sprüth Magers Berlin London amongst many others.

ART HK 11 will also have the ART FUTURES section, showcasing work by emerging artists represented by new galleries from around the globe. For the first time, the ART FUTURES prize will be sponsored by Lane Crawford, Asia’s leading multi-brand luxury retailer.

The prize is awarded to one artist featured in the section by an expert panel of judges who will include Lars Nittve, Executive Director of M+, the contemporary art museum in Hong Kong’s soon to be launched US$2.1 billion West Kowloon Cultural District; Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director of Exhibitions and Programs and Director of International Projects at the Serpentine Gallery in London; and Elaine Ng, Editor and Publisher of ArtAsiaPacific Magazine.
