Christian Dada Opens First Flagship Store Outside of Japan, in Singapore

19 August 2016

By Natalie White

Christian Dada, the Japanese avant-garde label known for its deconstructed designs, officially opened the doors to its first flagship store outside of Japan, in Singapore on 10 August.

The label founded by designer Masanori Morikawa in 2010, is based on the idea of Dadaism. Born out of his cross-cultural influence, he wanted a brand name that represented multiculturalism, embraces imperfections and rejects societal norms.
Adopting this attitude not only towards his clothing designs but also in life, Morikawa works to constantly deviate from the norm, progressively trying to break the mold to create pieces that reflect his passion of the artistic anarchical idea.

Located at 268 Orchard Road, the 1,700 square foot retail space is designed by +ft+/Fumiko Takahama Architects and features a stunning interior that depicts a fuse of modern and contemporary interpretation of a Japanese zen garden, reflecting the designer’s attachment to his Japanese heritage and aesthetics.

Featuring four photographs from Japan's most famed controversial artist, Araki Nobuyoshi, the photographs exhibited for the very first time are part of the 'Love on the Left Eye' series.

These photographs will be exhibited only for a limited time and is available for purchase.

Christian Dada's Autumn Winter 2016 collection is a collaboration with Nobuyoshi and depicts designs and imagery interpreted from his art works.

Specially commissioned for the opening as well was Japanese rope artist, Kinoko Hajime, who created two intricate rope installations using his signature Shibari method and dyed red ropes. These can be seen at the foyer of the building as well as inside the store.
