TAO Group together with Marina Bay Sands has launched their latest collaboration, KOMA, a Japanese restaurant and sushi bar that offers a modern interpretation of Japanese cuisine, which opened on 26 July 2019.
The restaurant offers diners with a modern interpretation of Japanese cuisine, featuring original creations by its Executive Chef Kunihiro Moroi, using fresh and seasonal produce and ingredients from Japan.
Bold and distinct interior design elements include a striking 20 metre-long passageway flanked with orange arches - reminiscent of the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto - that greet guests as they arrive and step into an intimate lounge where they can experience creative new cocktails or choose from the venue's extensive sake list.
Glass owls which line both the bar and a large wood "grid" suspended from the ceiling, represent wisdom, luck, and good fortune.
A dramatic one-of-a-kind 2.5 metre-high Japanese "bell" with 20 different faces towers above a traditional Japanese foot bridge and reflecting pool, providing a focal point for the main dining room.
The soaring 7-metre high ceiling features decorative acoustic panels in the shape of lily pads and is designed to mimic the surface of a pond. Anchoring the dining room is the 15-seat sushi bar with a dazzling display of the day's offerings. On the mezzanine, a semi-private dining room caters to intimate group gatherings, whilst offering an expansive view of the action below.
All these come together to complement the cuisine and lend to the modern and sophisticated vibe within the 230-seat restaurant.
The destination located within The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands, is designed by renowned American firm Rockwell Group, which was also responsible for TAO Downtown, Vandal, Feroce and Avenue in New York.
The opening of KOMA completes the trio of concepts launched by TAO Group and Marina Bay Sands as part of a new dining and entertainment complex at the integrated resort, along with nightclub MARQUEE which opened in April and cocktail lounge AVENUE in May this year.
KOMA also marks the fourth concept opened by TAO Group in collaboration with Marina Bay Sands, which began with LAVO Italian Restaurant & Rooftop Bar in January 2018.
