F1 Champions! Jenson BUTTON & BRAWN GP

In its maiden year, BRAWN GP has brought home the Constructor's Championship with Jenson BUTTON winning the Driver's Championship in the 2009 Formula One season.

A Recount of the 2009 Season for Jenson Button and Brawn GP
Earlier this year, it was announced on March 5 that Ross Brawn would buy out the former Honda team that had decided to withdraw its participation in the Formula One championships, and brand the new team Brawn GP

Jenson Button of United Kingdom and Rubens Barrichello of Brazil were confirmed as the team's drivers for 2009.

In the first race of the season at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Button took pole position, recording a first for the team and his fourth ever, with his team mate Barrichello in securing a second place starting position. Button subsequently led the race from start to finish to win the race ahead of his team-mate, the first time a team had scored a 1-2 finish on their debut since 1954.

In the next race in Sepang, Button once again secured pole position and win at at the Malaysian Grand Prix, setting the fastest lap in order to jump ahead of Jarno Trulli and Nico Rosberg during the first pit stops. The race was stopped due to heavy rain and because only less than 75% of the race had been completed, only half points were awarded to the top 10 positions. At Malaysia, Button recorded a unique hat trick pole starting position, win and fastest lap (which was also his first fastest lap).

At the Chinese Grand Prix, Button finished third behind Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber.

Button won the 4th race of the season at the Bahrain Grand Prix, from a starting position of fourth on the grid, finishing ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Jarno Trulli, who had started at pole position. This win marked the first time Button won the race for Brawn GP at racing speed (i.e. without starting in pole position).

In the 5th race of the season at Barcelona, Button qualified first again and took pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix. He went on to win his fourth race of the season.

At the Monaco Grand Prix, Button achieved his fourth pole position of the season, and his first in Monaco. This, after a last attempt during qualifying which ended up giving him his fastest in the entire qualifying session. Button went on to win the race, with his teammate Rubens Barrichello coming in second.

At the Turkish Grand Prix, Button qualified in second place behind Vettel, but in front of team-mate Barrichello. Button adopted a two-stop strategy and won his sixth race of the season, ahead of Mark Webber and Sebastien Vettel, while Barrichello did not complete the race, giving Brawn their first retirement of the season.

At the British Grand Prix, Button managed to finish sixth and fifth at the German Grand Prix, won by Mark Webber. At this point, his lead in the driver's championship was reduced to 21 over Sebastien Vettel of Red Bull Racing.

Brawn had high hopes for the Hungarian Grand Prix, as heavy updates were made to their cars. However, during the second part of qualifying, Barrichello experienced a suspension failure, subsequently causing an accident for Ferrari's Felipe Massa who spends the rest of the season recuperating and will only return to F1 in 2010. Button finished seventh in the Hungary.

At the Belgian Grand Prix, Button failed to qualify in the top 10 positions and during the race, Hamilton, Alguersuari, Grosjean, and Button were all involved in a crash. It resulted in Button's first retirement of the season, and it further reduced his championship lead to 16 points.

At the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Button qualified sixth and ultimately finished second, behind Barrichello giving Brawn another one-two win.

In Singapore, at F1's only night race, Button qualified twelfth and finished fifth. Barrichello's sixth place meant that Button was able to extend his championship lead to 15 points, with three races to go.

At the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka, Button qualified 7th, but along with Barrichello was demoted five places, for failing to slow for a yellow flag; he started the race from 10th position, subsequently finishing in 8th.

At the Brazilian Grand Prix at Sao Paulo, Button had faced an uphill battle if he had hoped to win the driver's championship, having qualified in fourteenth position while his closest challenger and teammate Barrichello secured pole position.

However, with the start at Brazil offering multiple crashes, and through careful, calculated and brilliant driving, which included multiple overtaking manouvers, Button managed to finish 5th and thus had enough points win the World Driver's Championship in Brazil, with one more race to go in Abu Dhabi.

In the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, under the Arabian twilight, Barrichello and Button started on fourth and fifth position respectively, and the newly crowned champion Jenson Button managed to finish third, after trying his best to pass Red Bull's Mark Webber in the final stretch of the last lap.

Congratulations to Jenson Button and Brawn GP!
