Hamilton Looks to Bounce Back at Spa

Lewis Hamilton is determined to bounce back from his Hungarian Grand Prix disappointment when Formua 1 racing resumes in Belgium later this month.

After the two-week summer’s break, F1 teams are now gearing up for the season restart and the Belgian Grand Prix around the Spa-Francorchamps circuit on Sunday, August 29.

Hamilton, the 25-year-old Vodafone McLaren Mercedes star from Herts, lost his lead in the FIA 2010 F1 World Drivers’ Championship to Red Bull’s Mark Webber after retiring from round 12 in Hungary at the beginning of the month.

His hopes of a podium finish were dashed by a faulty gearbox.

We’ll learn from this and we’ll just have to work even harder to make sure we don’t have any further problems this year, and that we can catch back up to the front-runners – which I’m certain we’ll be able to do.

Lewis had to retire from the Hungarian race on lap 24 when running fourth and could only watch as Aussie Webber took the chequered flag to storm into pole position in the race for the drivers’ championship.

Webber now has 161 points to his name, four more than Hamilton, with Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel hot on their heels in third place on 151.

McLaren Mercedes also lost top spot in the constructors’ standings to rivals Red Bull after the Hungarian race.

Despite his Hungaroring heartache, 2008 world champion Hamilton believes McLaren can still bounce back over the final seven races and rescue their season – starting in Spa over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Reigning F1 world champion Jenson Button is sure his crew and team-mate Hamilton can do better at the Belgian Grand Prix.

He said: “We’re a very positive and strong team, and we’ve been in difficult situations before, so we can definitely jump back from this – hopefully as soon as Spa-Francorchamps at the end of this month.”

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh expects his men to pull out all the stops to regain top spot in the championship.

“After the summer shutdown, we’ll come back fully refreshed and utterly determined to apply ourselves as hard as is humanly possible to take world championship honours this season,” said Whitmarsh.

“We’ve got lots of good people, we’ve got lots of good ideas, and we’re prepared to do lots of work.

We always knew that this year’s world championship was going to be a tough battle, but we’re up for that tough battle – so bring it on!
