Martin Whitmarsh believes that the ability to introduce innovations on their cars is the key to unlock the world title for them this F1 season.
Far from offering the polemics regarding the double-diffuser introduced by Brown GP, Toyota and Williams at the beginning of 2009, the 2010 Formula 1 season was marked by far more controversies and technical innovations.
First, McLaren F1 Team developed the F-duct vent system that was copied, more or less successfully by the rivals, and the guys at Red Bull Racing replied with an exhaust system that allowed the exhaust gases to be eliminated thorough the rear diffuser.
The latest innovation was brought by the team lead by the famous engineer Adrian Newey that introduce a highly flexible front wing, that transformed Red Bull Racing in the team with the fastest car in Formula 1.
All these innovations determined Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren’s Team Principal, to say that introducing new technologies on their cars is vital in the race for the world title this season. “We have not suspended the diffuser project, but we hope to invent something new,” said the Brit, quoted by Autosprint.
McLaren F1 Team’s officials is though cautious about the solution adopted by the rivals at Red Bull Racing for their front wing, warning his engineers not to use such methods until FIA makes this situation clear. “The FIA needs to make this area absolutely clear. If clarity does not come, we too can become very inventive and creative,” Whitmarsh also said.
FIA announced after the Hungarian Grand Prix that they will double the harshness of the tests regarding the flexibility of the front wing starting with the race at Spa-Francorchamps.
